A general biography of Prof. Emmanuel Leclainche. Overview of his childhood, schooling, teaching activities in the French veterinary schools, scientific investigations ( namely on erysipelas and anaerobes) and his exceptional personality. A reminder of his crucial role in reorganising the inspection of the “Service Départemental des Epizooties”, the “Inspection Générale des Ecoles Vétérinaires”, in setting up the Office International des Epizooties and the French Veterinary Academy, as well as in reforming the laws relevant to the veterinary profession (creation of the Veterinary Doctorate) or of the sanitary measures regarding animal diseases control.
